Extremities Manipulative Therapy online course

What is Extremities Manipulative Therapy?

While the Spinal Manipulative Therapy online course teaches about this essential segment of the body, the Extremities Manipulative Therapy online course focuses on the most important joint manipulations of legs and arms.

While manipulations to the spine involve greater risks due to nerve roots, spinal cord and important arteries that pass through the vertebrae, manipulations of the feet, knee, hip, shoulders, elbows, and wrists are much simpler and pose minimal risk. Even so, the course follows the international guidelines for safety and efficient learning, as we did with the Spinal Manipulation course.

Like the Spinal Manipulative Therapy, Extremities Manipulative Therapy targets disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. Including the effects of these disorders on general health. The principles stating that form defines function are widely used to bring well-being and balance back to the body.

This course was created with an emphasis on clinical practice and safety. It includes both diagnosis and treatment for extremities joints.

Extremities manipulation, as well as spine manipulation, can be the main treatment to solve many diseases. Even when it is not the main treatment, it can be a great ally for quick and effective recovery of the patient.

Joint Manipulation may be regulated differently from country to country or by state. Before enrolling in this course, make sure that you are able to practice it according to the laws of your country and state.

What is joint manipulation?

Joint manipulation or “adjustment” is a passive movement usually targeting synovial joints. The way to perform it is summarized in the HVLA initials. It means High Velocity, Low Amplitude. In other words, the manipulation is done when you bring the joint to the end of the passive range of motion (ROM). After that, a small and fast movement slightly beyond the end of the ROM will produce the desired therapeutic effects. Because of cavitation, which is the noise that occurs in certain manipulations, it is commonly known to patients as “click”. However, joint noise is not what we are looking for and often the technique is efficient even without them. What we are looking for is the correct nervous stimulus that normalizes the neuro-musculo-skeletal-vascular system of the involved body segment.

Another important aspect of manipulation is restoring joint mobility. Joint mobility can be reduced due to some tissue injury. Mobility can be restored by manually applying a controlled force to the restricted joints. The function is also restored with full mobility, accompanied by pain normalization.

Restricting tissue lesions can occur in a variety of ways. It may originate from a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object. They can also originate in repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an abnormal position frequently or adopting poor posture for a long period of time.

Whatever the origin, the injured tissues suffer from physical and chemical changes. These changes, in turn, can cause inflammation, pain and decreased function for an individual. Joint manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and adjacent tissues, restores mobility, relieving pressure, pain, and muscle tension. Once the nerve impulses and the blood flow are normalized, the self-healing and regeneration potential takes place and brings the body back into balance.
